Importing from Trello

Bring Trello boards into Kitty Board, add hearts to the jobs, and export any board to take it anywhere.

Got a family board in Trello? Bring it across in a couple of minutes, with its lists, cards, checklists and comments. Your Trello file is read on your phone or computer and never uploaded: only the boards you bring in are saved, like any other board. Only grown-ups can import.

1. Export the board from Trello

  1. In Trello, open the board.
  2. Open the board menu (the ⋯ at the top right), choose Print, export and share, then Export as JSON. It's free on every Trello plan.
  3. Save the file. Do the same for each board you want to move.

2. Choose the files in Kitty Board

  1. Tap New board, then Import from Trello. You'll also find it as From Trello in Board ideas on your home, and in Settings, Your data.
  2. Tap Choose Trello files and pick one or more files.

A file that isn't a Trello board export (or is damaged) gets a friendly note saying so, and nothing else changes.

3. Check what comes over

Each board shows a line like "Kitchen refit: 6 lists, 48 cards, 12 checklists, 3 comments". Tap What comes over for the details.

  • Comes over: the board name and colour (the nearest Kitty Board colour), open lists and cards in order, descriptions, due dates and whether cards were done, labels as categories (unnamed ones are named after their colour), checklists as tasks with ticks kept, comments with who wrote them and when, attachment links in a "Links from Trello" comment, and custom fields and Sum Up numbers as card details (money adds up in each list).
  • Stays behind: archived lists and cards, uploaded files (Trello only lets you download them signed in, so the card lists them and links back), other Power-Ups, stickers, votes, card covers and background photos.
  • Limits: up to 2,000 cards on a board, 100 tasks on a card and the 50 newest comments on a card, from files up to 20 MB. Trello's export only holds your most recent activity, so very old comments may be missing.

On the free plan your family can have 3 boards. If your files would take you over, Kitty Board says how many more boards you can bring in, and you tick the ones you want. The Family plan gives you unlimited boards. See Plans and upgrading.

4. Who's who?

The people on your Trello cards aren't in Kitty Board, so match each one to someone in your family, or Nobody. Their cards are then for that person. Kitty Board makes a first guess from their names. Tick Share the board with them and the people you matched can edit it too.

5. Add hearts to these jobs?

This step is optional. Tick a board to turn its rewards on, and each card gets suggested hearts: 1 for a plain card, plus 1 for every 3 tasks, up to 5. Open Change hearts card by card to set any of them, and choose Every card or Only cards for someone.

On the free plan one board in your family can have hearts. If yours already does, the board comes in without them, and you can add them later. More in Hearts and the Kitty Jar.

6. Bring it in

Tap Bring it in. Big boards come in a bit at a time with a progress bar. Then your new board opens and Kitty Board says "Imported from Trello".

The JSON export works on every Trello plan, free ones included.

Export a board

Your boards are yours. Take them anywhere. Open a board, tap its ⋯ menu and choose Export this board:

  • Kitty Board file (.json): the lists, cards, tasks, labels, comments and hearts. Import it again with Import a Kitty Board file, on the same import screen, on your account or someone else's.
  • Spreadsheet (.csv): a row for every card and task, with list, card, task, done, due, labels, hearts and person. Opens in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets.

Archived lists and cards stay behind. For a copy of everything in your account, use Settings, Your data, Download my data. Moving from Trello for the first time? Switching from Trello has the whole picture.
